Movie Trends: Too Many Lame Sequels

Avatar 2, Transformers 3, Clash Of The Titans 2 What do all these movies have in common? They should never be made. Seriously can we have a summer full of original films sometime in the near future? Not that all sequels are bad but Hollywood is getting very lazy lately. Any movie that is even remotely profitable ends up getting a sequel whether a sequel makes any sense to the story or not. I can't imagine why it would take four films to tell the story of a green Ogre and his ugly wife but here we are. Not all sequels are bad but Hollywood needs to take a look at how they are cheapening their product.

We should not have sequels to movies that may have made a large sum of money but weren't really that well liked by movie goers. I'm not talking about critics I'm talking about the actual people who go see movies. Sure Clash Of The Titans made a pretty good sum of money but I don't think most people who saw it were yearning for a sequel. Quite the opposite in fact. They were probably wondering how the first one got made to begin with.

Now I liked Avatar so why would I say this movie should not get made. It's simple really,  the story of Avatar has already been told. If we have another movie then it will just be a retelling of the same basic messages and story. All the characters stories were told. There is nothing to add. The story is over. So what is the point? People's time and money would be much better spent on an original story.

Don't get me started on Transformers 3 the first movie was stupid, the second somehow managed to be even more brain dead and nonsensical. And now we are going to have a third installment because the stupidity is not quite complete. Rumor has it the next film will feature a kid Transformer sidekick.

There are some sequels I'm actually looking forward to such as the next installment of Sherlock Holmes and Batman. Those movies actually make sense as sequels not that they will be better than the originals but it makes sense to continue the story. The characters are actually interesting and can grow in new installments. Unlike other sequels just being made out of a motivation for profit.

Agreed, there are only 4 great trilogies ever made: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, and Toy Story.

Some have gotten away with sequels: X-Men 1 and 2 were good but the last one was terrible. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were awesome (we'll have to see about the third installment, but I have high hopes). Iron Man 1 and 2, as well.

Then there's movies like the Matrix which was so awesome and yet they managed to suck all the awesomeness out of the second two.

Well some movies at least seem like good ideas to have a sequel to. Avatar though, the story has already been told, it's done. That one just seems like pure greed. Comic book stories are perfect for sequels because these characters are supposed to have many adventures. That doesn't mean that all of these sequels will be good.
