Best Movie Relationships Series - Stanely/Blanche

Stanley Kowalski/Blanche Dubois from A Streetcar Named Desire
Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando.

From the first scene between these two, it's obvious there is going to be trouble. Blanche Dubois comes to live with her sister Stella in New Orleans and butts heads with Stella's animalistic, crude husband, Stanley. The basis of the relationship is interesting even on paper - she's the overly refined, faux Southern belle who makes disparaging remarks to Stanley even as she tries her best to charm him. Stanley, on the other hand, is a primal ape of man who stomps around and roughly demands his way and gets it because of how attractive he is. By themselves, they are interesting characters. Is Stanley a purely evil man?
The answer to that isn't so clear. He has startlingly gentle moments towards his wife, though usually after a instance of violence. Was he always as brutal towards everyone as he is towards Blanche? That's not clear either. Then we have Blanche who is slowly growing insane with depression and disappointment, desperately clinging to some ideal of refinement and class even though her own past is spotted with some less-than-savory elements. Put these two characters together and its a potent mix of sexual attraction and hate. Their interaction is funny and tense - thanks to Tennessee Williams deft writing and the unbelievable acting ability of Brando. When Blanche fishes for a compliment from her suspicious and irritated brother-in-law, he merely levels a cold glare at her and says "you looks okay". And it's there that it becomes something of interest because it becomes clear that these two characters see right through each other and they really really don't like what they see.
